In reality, the different stages of your purifier wear out at very different rates, and replacing them all at once — or all on the same generic interval — either wastes money or leaves you running on a part that's overdue.
Sediment filter: every 3–4 months
The sediment filter is the first line of defence and clogs fastest, since it physically traps dirt, rust and particulate matter. If your source water is from a borewell or tanker rather than treated municipal supply, expect to change it closer to the 3-month mark.
Carbon filter: every 4–6 months
The carbon filter removes chlorine and odour-causing compounds. It doesn't clog the way a sediment filter does, but it does become chemically saturated — once that happens, chlorine starts passing through to your membrane, so replacing it on schedule protects the more expensive part downstream.
RO membrane: every 18–24 months
The membrane is the core purification stage and the most expensive part to replace, but also the longest-lasting — provided the sediment and carbon filters ahead of it have been changed on schedule. Skipping pre-filter changes is the most common reason membranes fail earlier than expected.
UV lamp: every 12 months
If your system includes a UV stage, the lamp should be replaced annually regardless of whether it still lights up — UV output drops with use well before the lamp visibly fails, and there's usually no other symptom to warn you.
A simple way to track it
Write the installation or last-change date on a sticker on the unit itself, or on the filter housing. It sounds basic, but it's the single most effective way to stop guessing when a service technician asks "when was this last changed?" — a question most people can't answer without a reminder like this.
